Why do you play games? I think there are two main reasons people play games. The first one is competitiveness, which we mostly see in games based on it, like Street Fighter, Call of Duty, Counter Strike, Valorant.

Also, often we play games to get better, climb the leaderboards, and see our skills improve with each match. But why do we play games that were not competitive, such as Diablo 4 now? The answer is simple. Because it has high playability.

But why does burnout occur, and what are its causes? Although I know Diablo 4 endgame has some issues. Especially the dropped Diablo 4 Items and equipment after reaching a certain threshold will have some problems. But this is not the focus of today’s discussion.

Diablo 4: Why Does Burnout Happen?

Effective Is Not Fun

Today we’re going to focus on one method that I believe can lead to burnout, and that’s following what works best. The problem with this is that sometimes the most efficient builds are the least interesting ones. And you’re trying to minimize everything to the maximum, even if that’s not pleasant. So this leads to burnout.

Game Loop Is Boring

Let’s look at Barbarian, the class I played in Season 1. The best skills a Barbarian can have in Season 1 are Lunging Strike, Shout and Whirlwind or Hammer of The Ancients. Let’s look at the game loop for Whirlwind Barbarian:

  1. Pop Wrath of The Berserker in difficult encounters
  2. Pop Rallying Cry, then War Cry and Challenging Shout
  3. Start spinning
  4. Be aware of your surroundings when your shouts are down

When it comes to build Hammer of The Ancients, just replace Whirlwind with Hammer of The Ancients. So, is this fun for you? If you were to repeat this Barbarian game loop for 100 hours, wouldn’t you burn out?

Diablo 4: OP Dual Whirlwind Barbarian Build

Now let’s look at the so-called “inferior” B-tier Barbarian builds. I also tried it when leveling, which is the walking arsenal build for critical strike. Here, you need to manage the walking arsenal buff and make sure you alternate your weapons.

This way you can deal more damage and reduce the cooldown of your ultimate ability. You’ll also want to keep an eye on HP of the mobs and invest more Diablo 4 Gold in your power so you can spam and reset death blows.

Rotation Mechanism Contradictions

Let’s take a look at a typical rotation here. Formation of Whirlwind looks more interesting to me. It keeps you more engaged in the game. The build I’m using in World Tier 3 is a combination of the weapon swap mechanic and Hammer of The Ancients. I want to build a Berserking Barbarian that smashes everything around. But the damage it does isn’t optimal.

So unless your fun lies in having the most efficient build possible, why would you play with it and not make your own build the way you see fit? Even if it’s not the best build. What is the reason for this in Diablo 4 in the current state of the game?

Diablo 4: Player Burnout Complaints and More

No Competing Elements

As of now, there are no leaderboards in Diablo 4, so the competitive element is completely gone, leaving only the fun element. Are you pushing your limits to the highest tier in Nightmare Dungeons?

Would you rather grind 100 Nightmare Dungeons and get bored, or 50 dungeons, and have fun? The first option will almost certainly lead to burnout, because when you treat the game as a game. You push the game without enjoying it, and of course you get burnt out of it and don’t want to play it anymore.

The same happens when you level up. If you’re repeating the same dungeon over and over to level up, it’s no surprise that you’ll get bored and exhausted. So the point here is to encourage you to play the game however you want, and play it in the way you find the most fun.

I actually believe that games are more fun when you make your own builds and play the game the way you want, rather than copying what works best. Because it also adds a level of discovery and engagement. So, what are your thoughts on this? Do you prefer to build it yourself? Please tell me what you think.
