Therefore, it's considered the best starter build of the season, offering unparalleled damage and survivability, and even transitioning to higher-level content like the Pit. Diablo 4 Season 12 Shield of Retribution Paladin Build Guide: Best Setup for S+ Tier Leveling & Pit Pushing

Why is it suitable for the early season?

First, Shield of Retribution Paladin build is easy to learn, has a clear upgrade path, and low gear requirements, making it perfect for early leveling.

While this build primarily utilizes thorns for damage, this thorn damage comes from skills rather than gear, so you basically only need some yellow gear.

Strictly speaking, you don't even need a weapon to use this build, and it works exceptionally well. It can instantly kill elite monsters on Hard difficulty, and Paladin's Aura passively kills enemies, so you don't even need to attack them.

Since this build doesn't require any specific gear or Legendary Aspects, you can play it from level 1 to 60, or even higher. It boasts extremely high movement speed, allowing you to quickly traverse Helltide or other areas, easily breaking through groups of enemies.

Furthermore, it has near-infinite resources, allowing you to continuously use skills. By using Rally skill in conjunction with Words of Sacrifice, you can convert life into resources, allowing you to continuously cast skills without worrying about running out of mana.

Skill Tree

Next, let's look at the skill tree setup for this build. Here, we'll only mention the most important primary skills that define this build. You can define the other secondary skills according to your playstyle.

Clash

First is Clash, which will help us gain additional Thorns damage. A key passive upgrade node for Clash skill is Punishment, designed to enhance Crusader's March buff. It grants players a higher chance of counterattacking and potentially increases Thorns damage, making it a key choice for building a high-damage, high-defense Paladin build.

As we mentioned before, for this build, we'll utilize Thorns damage generated by skills to easily kill enemies. The advantage of this is that we don't actually need any Thorns gear; all damage is gained passively through skills.

Blessed Shield

Next, the most important skill is Blessed Shield, an upgrade node for Shield of Retribution. This is our primary source of damage. It transforms Blessed Shield into a projectile shield that you can launch in front of your character. The shield pulses with Thorns damage. After six pulses, it detonates, dealing damage to surrounding enemies.

Therefore, Blessed Shield is also our primary damage skill. Any enemy not killed by our Aura will be killed by Blessed Shield and other skills.

Defiance Aura

Next is Defiance Aura and its upgrade, Rite of Thorns. It significantly boosts damage, providing a fixed Thorns damage to yourself and allies, and increasing total Thorns damage by 75%.

Furthermore, when you actually activate Defiance Aura skill, its active effect drastically reduces the cooldown of elite monsters and bosses. Therefore, sometimes even using Blessed Shield may not be enough to kill elite monsters and bosses. In these situations, you should use Defiance Aura to completely eliminate them, as its cooldown is very short and its damage output is very high.

Rally

Here we also have Rally and its Words of Sacrifice node, these two skills are what unify the entire build. They are key skills for maintaining the build's operation.

Words of Sacrifice makes Rally skill consume health and has no cooldown. This allows us to continuously use Rally skill and use other skills to recover health, thus gaining infinite resources. The movement speed bonus provided by the Rally skill is stackable, so you can maintain extremely high movement speed when you use Rally skill multiple times.

Consecration

Simultaneously, we can use a healing skill - Consecration - which helps restore life after consecutive uses of Rally skill.

Holy Light Aura

Finally, we use Holy Light Aura and Rite of Mercy to continuously deal area damage. This not only kills mobs, but the active effect of Holy Light Aura also heals our character.

Oaths System

For Oaths System setup in Shield of Retribution Paladin build, choosing Juggernaut Oath maximizes your damage and survivability. This Oath perfectly complements your skills, increasing damage and expanding the area of effect of Juggernaut skill for 5 seconds by consuming 8 stacks of Resolve.

Since Shield of Retribution upgrade skill Blessed Shield is considered a Juggernaut skill, it directly triggers damage and area-of-effect bonuses. Therefore, you only need to focus on frequently using Juggernaut skill to maintain the buff and managing stacks of Resolve to maximize the duration of the damage bonus.

Gear

Regarding gear, there's not much to say, as we mentioned before, this build doesn't require any specific gear.

You don't even need a weapon, at most, just a shield. But that's not a problem, because your character comes with a shield upon creation. So basically, you just need to pick up and equip whatever Diablo 4 items you find during your party. This means that in the early game, you won't have much of a budget to invest in gear for this build, and its performance won't disappoint!

Legendary Aspects

As for Legendary Aspects, there aren't any specific requirements either. If you want to increase your damage output, you can equip Needleflare Aspect, which will further increase your Thorns damage. You can obtain this Aspect from Yshari Sanctum Dungeon. It's also recommended to socket it into an Amulet, as this will give you an additional 50% Amulet performance bonus. But again, this isn't mandatory.

How It Works?

Finally, let's see how this build works and reaches its full potential. First, you'll find that regular mobs are instantly killed by your Holy Light Aura, so you'll hardly need to deal with them. For elite mobs, you should use Blessed Shield skill, which continuously increases your Thorns damage.

To further boost Thorns damage, now's the time to use Clash skill. However, even without Clash, your Thorns damage should be quite high, as your Blessed Shield also deals considerable damage.

Next, to move quickly and acquire a large amount of resources, you should repeatedly use Rally skill. Your movement speed boost stacks with each use of Rally, allowing you to maintain extremely high movement speed while acquiring a large amount of resources, and Rally has no cooldown.

However, maintaining Rally consumes life, so you'll need to heal from the damage inflicted by multiple uses of Rally, as well as damage from surrounding mobs. To do this, you can use Consecration skill, which has a shorter cooldown, allowing you to maintain your health, movement speed, and resource acquisition effectively.

This concludes the complete guide to Shield of Retribution Paladin build. This is a highly efficient, extremely fast-leveling build that will get you to level 60 in Diablo 4 Season 12 in no time. Join Season of Slaughter now and start your Paladin journey!
