Diablo 4 Season 12 One-Button Hammer of the Ancients Build | Achieve the max Critical Strike Damage and Chance!

Mar 17, 2026 Author: D4gold

In the pursuit of both convenience and efficiency, for every season of Diablo 4, you likely hope to find a single build capable of carrying you from start to finish, one robust enough to handle the vast majority of the game's content.

To be honest, this is a tall order, and perhaps only achievable for specific classes during specific seasons. However, if you choose to play Barbarian class in Season 12, this dream can indeed become a reality!

In this guide, we will introduce you to the relatively versatile Hammer of the Ancients Build for Season 12, along with the specific tweaks that allow it to tackle an even wider range of content.

Diablo 4 Season 12 One-Button Hammer of the Ancients Build | Achieve the max Critical Strike Damage and Chance!

Hammer of the Ancients Build overview

In truth, this build has long been a well-known and popular playstyle for Barbarian. However, in recent seasons, overshadowed by the emergence of new classes or other dominant builds, Barbarian itself has often been overlooked.

Broadly speaking, HotA build centers around the incredibly powerful skill of the same name. It allows you to crush enemies by raining down hammer strikes, boasting a potent blend of AoE clearing power and single-target damage, all while maintaining excellent survivability.

Of course, no build is perfect. The limitations of HotA build lie in its avefury mobility; specifically, its damage output can suffer in cramped or confined environments. Additionally, the build relies heavily on unique items.

Provided you are willing to accept these minor drawbacks, and assuming you equip the appropriate skills and foundational gear, you can effectively achieve a one-button playthrough experience.

Skill selection

The foundation of crafting any build is the skill tree. First, unlock Lunging Strike; this allows it to synergize with passive skills you will acquire later, providing additional damage bonuses while simultaneously closing the distance to enemies and triggering weapon swap effects.

Next, you need to fully rank up your core skill: Hammer of the Ancients. Its advanced upgrades will grant you increased fury generation, as well as a higher maximum fury cap, based on the number of enemies you strike.

Specifically, for every 15 points of fury you possess, you gain a 5% multiplicative bonus to both critical strike damage and critical strike chance. This means that as long as your fury reserves remain sufficiently high, you can achieve a 100% critical strike chance when casting Hammer of the Ancients.

Continue by fully ranking up Warpath to gain an additional damage bonus whenever you trigger an Overpower effect. Finally, fully ranking up Tempered fury will further increase your maximum fury capacity, which in turn translates directly into higher overall damage output.

Next, you need to unlock Ground Stomp and upgrade it to Strategic Ground Stomp. This ability instantly grants you 60 fury, and its generation is amplified by all modifiers that boost fury generation efficiency.

Ground Stomp itself gathers surrounding enemies into a tight cluster; when combined with the advanced effect of Strategic Ground Stomp, hitting an enemy reduces the cooldown of your Ultimate Skill by 15 seconds for each enemy struck.

Coupled with the exceptionally high cooldown reduction stats inherent to this build, this mechanism effectively allows your ultimate skill's cooldown to reset to zero instantly, enabling it to automatically refresh during combat.

Additional skill options and effects are listed below:

  • Imposing Presence: Increases your maximum life capacity.
  • Martial Vigor: Grants damage reduction against elite enemies.
  • Belligerence: Deals additional damage whenever you use Lunging Strike.
  • Outburst: Grants Thorns attribute.

Gear setup

While you can fine-tune your final gear setup based on the specific demands of a battle, the configuration outlined here serves as a solid baseline suitable for most situations.

Starting from the top, for the helmet slot, Crown of Lucion is an excellent choice. This item grants a 15% multiplicative damage bonus whenever you cast a resource-consuming skill; this bonus can stack up to 7 times.

However, as a trade-off, the resource consumption of the affected skill increases by 30%. Consequently, Lunging Strike becomes a crucial tool in this build, and during combat, it is best to avoid mindlessly spamming your primary damage-dealing skill.

For the chest armor, Mantle of the Mountain's Fury is a highly recommended option. Whenever you cast Hammer of the Ancients, this chest piece emits a beam that detonates the earthquakes you've generated, resulting in significant additional damage.

Next up are the gloves. Wyrdskin is the recommended choice here. While you could opt for other standard gloves as a substitute, Wyrdskin offers the unique benefit of applying the vulnerable status effect to enemies.

Enemies afflicted with the vulnerable status deal significantly less damage, the lower the enemy's level, the greater the damage reduction. Thus, in addition to providing defensive damage mitigation, these gloves also indirectly contribute to your offensive damage output.

Finally, Tibault's Will pants increase your maximum resource capacity, thereby substantially boosting the damage dealt by your Hammer of the Ancients skill. Furthermore, if you are currently in Unstoppable state, these pants grant you an additional damage bonus.

In fact, once you enter Unstoppable state, you will instantly replenish your primary resource, a feature that proves invaluable for navigating the early-game progression phase.

As for weaponry, you should opt for a two-handed mace and imprint it with Aspect of Ancestral Force. This provides a multiplicative damage bonus of up to 240%, which is particularly effective against bosses.

Regarding Tempering affixes, your priority should be to roll for a chance to deal double damage with your HoTA skill. Subsequently, if resources permit, aim to farm for a version of the item that features GA.

In terms of standard affixes, prioritize stacking strength and maximum life; additionally, ideally, your gear should include bonuses to vulnerable damage or critical strike damage.

For your secondary weapon slot, consider pairing it with Ramaladni's Magnum Opus. This weapon converts half of your current maximum fury value into a multiplicative damage bonus.

Alternatively, you could equip The Grandfather. This weapon significantly boosts your critical strike damage, a highly synergistic choice, given that your attacks in this build will almost always land as critical strikes. If you manage to maximize your maximum fury to its absolute limit, this weapon will unleash its full, top-tier potential.

That concludes our guide for today. If you prefer to focus your efforts on exploring the dungeons and events of Season 12 rather than consuming excessive time on build crafting, HoTA Barbarian is undoubtedly an excellent choice!
