Diablo 4 Lord of Hatred New Opening Cinematic kills off key ally and reveals more shocking content | Don't miss the final dev livestream!

Apr 23, 2026 Author: D4gold

With just one week remaining until the launch of Lord of Hatred expansion, Diablo 4 released two new videos on April 21 and 22: a two-minute launch trailer and a five-minute official opening cinematic.

Rather than focusing on the new mechanics and features you may already be familiar with, these two videos place a greater emphasis on previewing the new storyline that is about to unfold.

In this article, we will analyze the content of these new trailers to provide a brief overview of the new narrative, as well as share other essential information you need to know to fully enjoy this expansion.

Analysis of the new opening cinematic

Compared to the launch trailer, which consisted largely of flashback sequences, the new opening cinematic is longer and presents a more cohesive and complete narrative.

The storyline of Lord of Hatred picks up immediately following the events of the previous expansion, Vessel of Hatred. That story concluded with Mephisto taking possession of Akarat's body, leaving players with a massive cliffhanger.

Consequently, the central thread of this new story will be the struggle against Mephisto. In this context, a key character, and one of your allies, Neyrelle, will play a pivotal role in Mephisto's defeat by making a profound personal sacrifice.

In the opening cinematic, Mephisto, impersonating Akarat, attempts to deceive Neyrelle and lure her to the side of evil; however, the brave young woman sees through his ruse and firmly rebuffs him.

Neyrelle not only exposes Mephisto's true identity but also reveals that, thanks to a brief psychic link she previously shared with him, she has discovered the key to his defeat: Spear of Light.

This revelation enrages the demonic overlord Mephisto, causing him to lash out in a fit of rage and inadvertently kill Neyrelle. Afterward, to ensure the secret of Spear of Light remains hidden, he burns the manuscripts in which Neyrelle had recorded this vital information.

Fortunately, perhaps having foreseen this very outcome, the scene shifts to reveal a bird carrying a message regarding Mephisto's weakness, flying toward Skovos. This ensures that Wanderer (your character) and Lorath will be able to acquire this critical intelligence.

Main quest speculation

Based on the storyline presented in the opening cinematic, the ultimate boss of Lord of Hatred is likely Mephisto. Furthermore, given that he has assumed the guise of Akarat, many of the faithful, his former devotees, will probably be deceived by him.

Moreover, the entirety of the main questline appears to culminate in the acquisition of Spear of Light, the weapon required to defeat Mephisto. Interestingly, to achieve this objective, you may need to forge an alliance with Lilith.

Throughout Diablo 4, Lilith has consistently fulfilled the role of an antagonist. This is not merely because she is Mephisto's daughter, but primarily because she ceaselessly sows chaos and discord throughout Sanctuary.

However, all of her actions are ultimately driven by a desire to break free from the dominion of Prime Evils; thus, from this specific perspective, she and Mephisto are, in fact, diametrically opposed.

Naturally, as you progress through the main questline, you will have the opportunity to unlock new Diablo 4 items, specifically gear introduced in this expansion, to enhance your character, successfully transition into the endgame, and prepare to face the final showdown.

A glimpse of Skovos

Diablo 4 has long been renowned for its distinct artistic style, characterized by its dark, visceral, and often gory aesthetic, resulting in a consistently somber and muted color palette.

Interestingly, judging by the footage revealed in the launch trailer, the newly introduced region of Skovos appears to be a notable exception to this rule.

Much like Vessel of Hatred expansion introduced the region of Nahantu, Lord of Hatred brings with it the new region of Skovos.

It seems to be a sprawling fortress or castle complex built directly into the cliffsides overlooking the sea, guarded by sentinels whose appearance bears a striking resemblance to Paladin class.

It is anticipated that you will need to complete a portion of the main questline within this region, engaging with and defeating the various minions of Mephisto you encounter there.

Don't miss the final LoH Dev Livestream!

In addition to the two latest trailers and other known details mentioned above, Diablo 4 is scheduled to host a final Dev Livestream dedicated to Lord of Hatred on April 23rd at 11:00 AM Pacific Time!

The livestream will be divided into two segments: a presentation and a Q&A session. The former will offer a deeper dive into the skill tree, Talismans, and other core new mechanics, while the latter will provide further insights and details through direct responses to questions submitted by the community.
