Diablo 4 Lord of Hatred Horadric Cube Transforms Gear Endgame | Say goodbye to town portal salvage runs

Apr 15, 2026 Author: D4gold

With the release of Lord of Hatred expansion on April 28, Diablo 4 will truly enter its 2.0 phase. The skills, difficulty, and gear you've grown familiar with are all undergoing massive reworks. The developers have begun warming up for the launch, releasing teasers and revealing more details.

In a recent endgame content trailer, one small detail caught players' attention: a Magic-quality Ancestral item appeared in a drop scene set in Torment 2. Let's use this as a starting point to explore what changes are coming to the gear system.

Diablo 4 Lord of Hatred Horadric Cube Transforms Gear Endgame Say goodbye to town portal salvage runs

Horadric Cube

Speaking of the gear system, we have to talk about a classic mechanic from Diablo II - Horadric Cube. This is the brand-new item crafting mechanic arriving after the update. This legendary artifact will once again become the core of how players handle gear and craft items in Diablo 4, and it will also reshape how you manage your loot.

Magic Ancestral

The developers have only shown that Ancestral Unique items can drop at different qualities, but they haven't revealed their specific affixes yet. Assuming the affix system works the same as current gear, a Magic item usually carries 2 to 3 affixes. In the past, such items were often ignored by players. But in the new system, you can put that blue item into Horadric Cube and add extra affixes to it.

Gear Management

Horadric Cube can convert three pieces of the same type of gear or charm into one new piece of the same type. For example, you can combine three helmets to create a new helmet.

You can also use specific materials to cycle and convert existing Unique items. This means you won't have to keep going back to town to sort your inventory while farming bosses; instead, you can filter and keep only Diablo 4 items you want on the spot.

The development team noticed that players grew tired of the process of picking up every piece of gear and then returning to town to salvage it. As a result, the traditional salvaging mechanic will be removed, replaced by a brand-new crafting material system that is obtained directly from killing monsters. Where these new materials drop will be announced once the update goes live.

In the future, you will only need to pick up the types of gear you actually want. You can gather a full inventory of that weapon type, return to Horadric Cube, and perform a recycle - giving yourself another chance to obtain a desired item from a dungeon you've already cleared. If you have exhausted your Lair Boss materials, this becomes an effective way to extend your farming path.

Gear Upgrade Path

According to developer confirmation, Magic-quality gear can be gradually upgraded to Legendary quality through Cube. Although the trailer's scrollbar only showed a portion of the recipes, the actual available options are far more than half.

One clear recipe is: combine 1 Rare item with new crafting materials to upgrade that Rare item to Legendary quality. This means every Rare item that drops on the ground could have potential. However, it is not yet clear whether the upgrade automatically adds an Aspect, or whether it can raise a low-item-power item directly to the new cap of 900 Item Power.

Adding Affixes

In Season 12, if an item naturally has only three affixes - even if all three are perfect - you cannot add a fourth; you can only re-roll one of them. But in the new system, you can actively add a random affix.

Simply place a Magic or Rare item with three perfect affixes into Horadric Cube. It will automatically identify the required materials (you don't need to search your inventory manually - the materials will be stored in a dedicated material tab). Perform the conversion to add a fourth affix to the item. You can then re-roll this new affix through other means, ultimately achieving the ideal configuration of four perfect affixes. This means that the most powerful gear in the future may well come from base items that were completely overlooked in the past.

Item Power

In the updated system, the maximum Item Power for all gear will be raised from 800 to 900. This change affects all players, regardless of whether you have acquired the expansion. The base game itself will also apply this numerical adjustment. However, all gear you currently have equipped (including items on your character and in your stash) will not be automatically upgraded to 900. They will remain locked at their original Item Power, just like old gear from past season transitions.

Therefore, if you plan to continue using your Eternal Realm character, it's advisable to log in ahead of time and clear out or salvage any gear in your stash that you no longer use.

If you still have a large number of Mythic-quality items, consider salvaging them to obtain Resplendent Sparks. Once the new version arrives, these Resplendent Sparks may be used to re-craft higher-item-power Mythic gear. Although it's not yet known exactly what Mythic crafting formulas will look like in the new expansion, this is a worthwhile preparatory step for players who value their Eternal Realm characters.

Loot Filter

The new expansion will introduce a Loot Filter to the base game (no need to obtain the expansion to use it). This feature is highly granular, allowing you to set, condition by condition, exactly which gear you want to see displayed.

Filter Conditions

You can set the filter to show only Legendary items with a Greater Affix, and require that the item include at least one specific affix of your choosing. You can go even deeper, selecting exact affixes - for example, showing only Ancestral items that can upgrade your Codex of Power, while hiding any Ancestral item that would not upgrade Codex.

Import and Export

A very convenient feature is the ability to import a Loot Filter made by another player with a single click. If you want to copy another player's build, you can download and import their shared Loot Filter settings. This lets you find usable gear much more quickly and conveniently, instead of sifting through piles of junk items.

This Diablo 4 update aims to make gear crafting deeper, more flexible, and more efficient. Whether you are a seasonal player or an Eternal Realm player, understanding these changes in advance and preparing accordingly will help you get back on your feet faster once the new version arrives.
