Diablo 4 Compass to Carnage Event: Is Farming Infernal Hordes worth your time now?

May 21, 2026 Author: D4gold

Dear players, 3.0.2 Patch Notes released for Diablo 4 on May 19th not only weakened the skills of Warlock and Necromancer, but also included a very important bug fix. Additionally, a new limited-time event Compass to Carnage was announced. So, what should we focus on in these updates, and what should we do next?

Class Balance Adjustments

This hotfix primarily nerfed two powerful builds: Necromancer's core skill Blood Spear and Warlock's Eviscerate skill.

The reason is that the development team discovered and fixed a serious bug that allowed for infinite damage. This bug, which previously allowed certain builds to deal damage far exceeding the design limit for a short period, is now completely disabled, and the strength of the affected builds has returned to normal levels.

However, at the same time, Sorcerer's Ball Lightning received a significant buff. Ball Lightning is now reclassified as a core skill. This means that the skill can now once again benefit from all core skill-related buffs, including Paragon nodes, equipment affixes, and Fractured Winterglass effect. Ball Lightning Sorcerer's return to top-tier builds may not be far off.

The Impact of Ball Lightning Regaining its Core Skill Label

Ball Lightning was significantly weakened after being removed from the core skill category. After this fix, it not only displays as a core skill in the skill interface but also has its damage calculation restored.

First, Fractured Winterglass effect, a unique amulet, increases core skill damage and reduces cooldown for every 100 Mana spent, providing a significant boost to Ball Lightning once again.

Secondly, Ball Lightning can directly boost damage output by utilizing core skill damage affixes on weapons, rings, and gloves.

Furthermore, Rare and Legendary nodes related to core skills on Paragon board can now be utilized.

While the skill descriptions may not be updated yet, the underlying game mechanics are already implemented. With the previously fixed Unique Focus: Strike of Stormhorn, Ball Lightning Sorcerer build is highly likely to regain its position as one of the top builds capable of clearing Pit 150.

When building Ball Lightning Sorcerer, we'll need to focus on adjusting core skill damage affixes and rerolling gear attributes.

Limited-Time Event: Compass to Carnage

Remember Compass to Carnage? It's back as a limited-time event, currently live and running until May 26th. You still have time to participate.

During this event, players playing Infernal Hordes will not only receive more Infernal Compass through Helltide caches or Tree of Whispers rewards, but more importantly, the frequency of Chaos Waves in each round will be significantly increased.

Previously, Chaos Waves only appeared about once every 10 waves; after the update, they will trigger almost every other wave, with the actual trigger probability increasing to approximately 50%. This means your Aether could potentially accumulate to nearly 2000 in a single run, significantly increasing your final chest rewards and material gains.

Changes to Chaos Waves and Rewards in Infernal Hordes

Compass to Carnage event also includes Chaos Begets Chaos effect, which significantly increases the number of Chaos Waves appearing in each round of Infernal Hordes battles.

Specifically, Chaos Waves include special events such as March of the Goblins and Elite Clusters. These events drop large amounts of Aether at once.

However, even so, Infernal Hordes remains controversial among players due to its excessive time consumption. A complete run of 10 waves takes approximately 10 to 12 minutes, while the same amount of time could be used to complete 5 to 6 Nightmare Dungeons.

From a pure time efficiency perspective of reward acquisition, Infernal Hordes is still inferior to Nightmare Dungeons.

War Plans Investment and Infernal Hordes Efficiency

Players can unlock various buffs in War Plans, and those for Infernal Hordes include increased Chaos Waves spawn rate, increased Aether drop rate, and reduced Chaos Wave intervals.

If we max out War Plans buffs related to Infernal Hordes, Aether reward can potentially double, even reaching over 4000 Aether per round.

It's worth noting that while Infernal Hordes aren't usually considered the most efficient content, they are still essential for completing specific objectives in the seasonal journey.

Event and Farming Efficiency Recommendations

For players seeking maximum time efficiency, participating in the concurrent Tree of Whispers event is still the best option, as it offers double rewards and a higher probability of yielding desirable Diablo 4 items and materials from the reward cache.

In contrast, while Infernal Hordes mode sees a significant increase in Chaos Waves in this event, its base duration is longer, and each run requires one Infernal Compass, with additional time needed to acquire them. Therefore, unless players have maxed out the corresponding War Plans bonuses, it's still not recommended as a primary daily farming method.

Furthermore, no new Goblins event was launched simultaneously. March of the Goblins previously offered the rare material Resplendent Spark as a reward, but based on past experience, this may be added in the future.

If players need to quickly acquire Infernal Compass, they can go to Helltide and open any chest; each chest has approximately a 20%-30% chance of dropping one Infernal Compass.

So, these are the key points to focus on in Diablo 4 3.0.2 Patch Notes, and the benefits of limited-time events. Good luck with your game!
