Secret Cow Level, which was accessed through a special portal in both Diablo 2 and Diablo 3. Diablo 4 players think they may be getting close to unveiling the entrance to the game’s Secret Cow Level, and a new item introduced in the latest game update could be the key clue.
In Diablo 4 2.0 update’s PTR, there are more signs of a cow level that could be coming to the game. Discussions about the original Diablo’s lack of cow levels were so heated that the development team may have added secret cow-centric content to subsequent games. Here’s everything we know about Secret Cow Level in Diablo 4.
Was There A Secret Cow Level In Diablo 4?
Diablo 4 development team has said that there won’t be a Secret Cow Level in Diablo 4, as they prefer to keep the game’s darker vibes compared to the more cartoony style of Diablo 3. Although the original Diablo 2 was known for its dark style, and the inclusion of an unlockable Secret Cow Level didn’t change the tone of the game much.
However, with Diablo 3’s art style receiving criticism, the developers may want to move away from the previous style, and removing Secret Cow Level is just part of this strategy. Diablo 4’s design wanted to ground, ensuring it would truly reflect gothic, dark themes.
Although a Secret Cow Level has yet to be found in Diablo 4, the game does include a few clues pointing to the hidden level. For example, Oxen Gods have sparked a lot of discussion among players, as well as Bloody Wooden Shard item that has a W carved into it, which could be related to a peg-legged boy that Tristram killed in Diablo 1, and Musty Tome item could also be a reference to Tome of Town Portal. These two items need to be combined via Horadric Cube to open a portal to Secret Cow Level in Diablo 2.
Where To Find Items On Hidden Levels?
- Bloody Wooden Shard drops in Kehjistan or Hawezar
- Intricate Metallic Fragment drops in Dry Steppes
- Musty Tome drops in Scosglen or Fractured Peaks
To collect these items, the player needs to kill 666 cows in the designated area. There is a global counter in the game, so the counter will increase even if the cows are killed by other players. However, to get the item, the player needs to make the 666th kill themselves. There is also a timer that lasts for 666,666 seconds (about 7 days). Once this time limit is exceeded, the counter will reset and the player will have to start their cow hunt all over again.
Once all three relics are collected, the player needs to take them to Ked Bardu and drop them into the pool along with the Oxen statues. After recovering these items from the pool, the player will interact with the three remaining statues. After interacting with all of them, the player will receive a Strange Key, which can be used to open Forlorn Hovel in Scosglen. In this room, the player will encounter more demon cows, which will drop a Stamina Potion and some Diablo 4 Gold when defeated.
Will Diablo 4 Get A Secret Cow Level?
While these items in Diablo 4 may simply be an Easter egg nod to the past, they may play a more important role in the future. It is worth mentioning that Diablo 3 did not include a Secret Cow Level when it was originally released. In fact, a loading screen in Diablo 3 clearly stated There is no Secret Cow Level, but this screen was later removed and the level was added. However, the level is accessed via a rift, rather than using Wirt’s Leg and a Tome of Town portal, despite Wirt’s Leg item being present in Diablo 3.
Diablo 4 Patch 2.0 PTR Features More Cow Level Clues
While data mining Diablo 4 2.0 update’s PTR, Wowhead appears to have discovered some suspicious items that could be the key to unlocking the true Secret Cow Level. First, a Rusted Bardiche can be found in PTR. A Bovine Bardiche appeared in Diablo 3, and this knife allowed players to access Secret Cow Level in Diablo 3.
Furthermore, four more items with unique descriptions can be found, Crooked Staff, Jabbering Gemstone, Rusted Old Bell, and Unusual Key. These items could be a reference to Wirt’s Bell, Staff of Herding, and Gibbering Gemstone in Diablo 3, which all helped unlock the secret pony level in Diablo 3. There is now a lot of speculation that these exact items may also unlock the long-rumored Secret Cow Level in Diablo 4.
That’s all we have to say about Secret Cow Level so far. If Diablo 4’s relics are anything like the speculated relics from Diablo 3, then the much-anticipated Secret Cow Level could very well make an appearance in version 2.0. Since Diablo 4 Public Test Realm (PTR) runs until September 11, a few weeks before the game’s October 8 update with Season 6 ends, players will have a chance to check it out for themselves and potentially find out more about the matter.
