How to farm Crux of the False Prophet in Diablo 4 Season 13 & Lord of Hatred? The secret to unlock Mephisto's Hoard!

May 19, 2026 Author: D4gold

With the introduction of the new boss, Mephisto, alongside other mechanical adjustments, the system for obtaining Lair Boss Keys in Diablo 4 Season 13 and Lord of Hatred expansion has undergone some changes.

More specifically, the various distinct keys previously required for specific Initiate and Greater bosses have been consolidated into two universal types: Lair Key and Greater Lair Key.

Additionally, a brand-new key, exclusive to Mephisto, has been introduced: Crux of the False Prophet.

Fortunately, the farming methods for Lair Boss Keys of other tiers have also been streamlined; the only new item you really need to familiarize yourself with is Crux of the False Prophet. But don't worry, we've put together a detailed guide to walk you through it!

How to farm Crux of the False Prophet in Diablo 4 Season 13 & Lord of Hatred? The secret to unlock Mephisto's Hoard!

What is Crux of the False Prophet?

As a Lair Boss Key usable exclusively for Mephisto encounter, Crux of the False Prophet is used to unlock the corresponding treasure hoard that appears after the boss has been defeated.

Mephisto's loot pool contains a variety of General Unique items suitable for Jewelry and Armor slots, as well as class-specific Unique items tailored to every class except Spiritborn:

Class Unique Item
General Banished Lord's Talisman, Locran's Talisman, Mother's Embrace, X'Fal's Corroded Signet, Blood-Mad Idol, Thundergod's Blessing, Signet of Pelghain, Crown of Lucion, Endurant Faith, Fists of Fate, Flickerstep, Frostburn, Godslayer Crown, Paingorger's Gauntlets, Penitent Greaves, Rakanoth's Wake, Razorplate, Soulbrand, Tassets of the Dawning Sky, Yen's Blessing, Tibault's Will, Temerity, Frostburn, Wyrdskin
Barbarian / Druid / Necromancer / Paladin Azurewrath, Shard of Verathiel, The Butcher's Cleaver, Thousand-Eye Reaver
Rogue / Sorcerer Azurewrath, Shard of Verathiel, Rustbitten Dirk

It is worth noting that if you complete this boss encounter as part of a party, only one member of the group needs to possess Diablo 4 Crux of the False Prophet to unlock the hoard, allowing the entire team to claim their rewards.

How to farm Crux of the False Prophet?

Methods for obtaining Lair Boss Key can be broadly categorized into two types: random drops and guaranteed drops. However, the latter is typically a one-time acquisition, whereas random drops allow for repeated farming.

Season Journey Rank Rewards

Season 13's Season Journey features a total of 9 ranks, which must be unlocked sequentially by completing various objectives before the season concludes.

Accordingly, you must complete the objectives for Season Journey Rank 7, specifically, defeating Echo of Lilith boss on Torment 8 difficulty, to advance to Rank 8 and claim the following Rank 7 rewards, including Crux of the False Prophet:

  • 4 Paragon Points
  • Gilded Season Rank Laurel
  • Crux of the False Prophet
  • Resplendent Cache
  • Atavistic Echo
  • 1 Neathiron
  • 800 Forgotten Souls
  • 1,600 Obducite

Defeating Lair Bosses

After defeating an Initiate or Greater Lair Boss and opening its corresponding Hoard, there is a low probability of obtaining Crux of the False Prophet. However, the higher Torment difficulty you select, the greater the drop chance becomes.

Although Initiate Lair Bosses offer a lower drop rate for Crux of the False Prophet, farming them is a prerequisite for obtaining Greater Lair Keys.

Furthermore, if you have already acquired Crux of the False Prophet through other means, and your character's power level permits, successfully challenging Echo of Mephisto directly may also yield this item within his hoard.

Advancing War Plans

Introduced as a new feature in Lord of Hatred expansion, War Plans allow you to freely customize your endgame experience, thereby unlocking more targeted buffs and rewards.

For every activity you complete sequentially within your custom War Plans list, you earn points; these points can then be used to customize bonuses tailored to specific types of endgame activities.

Therefore, if you wish to utilize this feature to assist in farming Crux of the False Prophet, you should prioritize advancing through Lair Bosses Upgrade Tree. The following nodes within this tree are particularly useful:

  • Lair of Plenty: All Lair Bosses gain +1 Monster Power and drop an additional Hoard upon death.
  • Ultimate Nemesis: Defeating all Greater Lair Bosses summons an additional demon. This challenge is unlocked by consuming 5 Betrayer's Husks; successful completion rewards you with 10 Hoard Chests.
  • Nemesis Tides: Defeating Lair Bosses during Helltides grants additional random Lair Boss materials (Torment difficulty only).

Other Elite Enemies

In addition to the methods mentioned above, defeating Elite enemies or World Bosses during gameplay also carries a chance, albeit a very low one, of dropping Crux of the False Prophet. Therefore, you should not rely on this method.

How to defeat Mephisto?

Mephisto is not only one of Exalted Lair Bosses but also a main story boss introduced to Diablo 4 via Lord of Hatred expansion.

At the start of the encounter, he appears in the form of Echo of Akarat; he subsequently reverts to his true form, initiating a distinct, two-phase follow-up battle.

Mephisto utilizes a unique set of abilities during each phase; however, his attacks primarily revolve around spawning damaging environmental effects across the battlefield, making high mobility absolutely essential for survival.

To access this encounter, you must progress through Lord of Hatred campaign until you reach Skovos Isles, where you will locate an area known as The Birthplace.

In addition to Unique items and Crux of the False Prophet, defeating this boss will earn you Mephisto's Slaughterer player title, a fitting testament to your prowess.

It is worth noting that while Lair Bosses are a core mechanic of Diablo 4, Mephisto is a boss specifically added in Lord of Hatred expansion.

Consequently, if you have not unlocked this expansion, you will be unable to obtain or utilize Crux of the False Prophet, even if you are playing during Season 13.

That concludes our guide for today. If you have yet to encounter Mephisto, this guide should prove invaluable as you continue your journey! Press onward, Wanderer!
