How should you Sort out your Stash in Diablo 4 before Lord of Hatred goes live?

Apr 16, 2026 Author: D4gold

Once Season 12 concludes, Lord of Hatred expansion for Diablo 4 will go live, bringing a host of major changes, including a raised level cap, adjustments to item power, and entirely new game mechanics.

Because the next season will differ completely from previous ones, relying on experience may cause you to miss out on certain things – especially if you play on Eternal Realm. To ensure you don't permanently lose valuable items and cosmetic rewards, be sure to complete the following key tasks before the expansion drops.

How should you Sort out your Stash in Diablo 4 before Lord of Hatred goes live?

Core Changes

Before taking any action, you first need to understand the root cause driving all these changes: the increased ceiling for Item Power.

Based on data mining and official previews, the expansion will raise the game's difficulty ceiling to Tormented 12, accompanied by a broad increase in character levels and gear strength. We can already see brand-new Unique items with an Item Power of 900 in the previews. This confirms earlier speculation that the character level cap will be raised to 70, unlocking even higher Item Power tiers.

Item Power is a key metric that determines a piece of gear's baseline value. Take today's meta gear at 800 Item Power: its stat bonuses may be only half – or even less – of what future 900 Item Power gear will provide. While Masterworking system can somewhat upgrade your existing gear, the gap in base Item Power means that such gear will underperform significantly in endgame high-difficulty content once the expansion launches.

Consequently, the vast majority of non-Mythic gear below 900 Item Power in the current version will lose its competitiveness in the expansion's endgame.

Season Content

Season Journey

Open your Season interface and make sure you have manually claimed all rewards for completed Season chapters. This includes every item and currency in the free Battle Pass tiers.

Event Shop

There is currently a crossover event with DOOM. Check your progress in this limited-time event. Be sure to redeem all unclaimed cosmetic rewards using the event's exclusive currency. Once the season ends, such limited-time events typically do not return, and missed cosmetics will be very hard to obtain again.

Eternal Realm

After the season ends, seasonal characters and Diablo 4 items will be transferred to Eternal Realm. At that point, the system will provide a temporary stash tab named Last Season Withdraw Only, which holds the items transferred from the previous season. Any items left inside this tab will be permanently deleted during the next seasonal rollover. Therefore, you need to log into Eternal Realm and sort out your stash.

Items You Must Keep

Mythic Unique Items

Even though current Mythic items may only have 800 Item Power, their unique and powerful effects will still be hard to replace in the early days of the expansion. Examples include Ring of the Starless Skies, which greatly reduces resource costs, and Heir of Perdition, which provides a high bonus to critical strike chance.

Another important reason to keep Mythic items is Resplendent Spark. Even if old-version Mythic gear becomes outclassed later, you can salvage them to obtain Sparks, which can be used at Jeweler to target-craft newer versions or brand-new Mythic gear. Do not casually salvage any Mythic items in your stash.

Runes

Runes are a key material for crafting Mythic items. Although the expansion may introduce new runes, keeping your existing rune stock ensures that you will have enough resources right at the start of the season to attempt crafting new Mythic gear.

Gems

Remove all gems from your stash and from your character's gear slots. Based on past patterns, as World Tiers increase, the cost of upgrading to higher-tier gems – in both gold and gem dust – grows exponentially. Hoarding existing gem fragments or upgrading them into high-level gems now will save you a significant amount of materials and gold later when you need to upgrade beyond Royal-level gems in the expansion.

Amulets with Passive Skill Ranks

There are rumors that the expansion may rework the passive skill system. As a result, amulets that are currently strong because they grant "+X ranks to all passive skills" or ranks to specific passives may have uncertain future value.

In particular, Mythic items like Shroud of False Death, which gives +1 to all passive skills, may have its affix reworked or even disabled entirely. It is advisable to hold off on salvaging such items with valuable passive-skill affixes and wait for official patch notes.

Items You Should Clear Out

With the exception of a few Legendary or Unique items that remain core to meta builds, all gear below 800 Item Power (including items fully Masterworked) can be directly salvaged at Blacksmith. Such items will have very little value in the future high-Item-Power environment, and keeping them in your stash is pointless. Turning them into crafting materials is a far better choice.

Additionally, the expansion introduces a new crafting system called Horadric Cube, which allows you to reforge and upgrade gear. Cube's upgrade recipes may require new crafting materials, such as Primordial Dust and its enhanced variants.

It is currently unclear whether salvaging old-version gear will yield these new currencies. However, given that items left in the previous season's temporary stash will be deleted by the system if not handled, the safest approach is to salvage all the useless gear you have in bulk. Even if you don't obtain the new currencies, you will at least recover regular materials like gold, Sigil Powder, and Forgotten Souls.

Before the expansion launches, it is best to set aside some time to organize your stash, clear out useless gear, and convert it into materials. This way, you will enter the expansion with the richest resource reserves and the cleanest stash space possible.
